  8. The end-user of shareware products will see a number of benefits
  9. from the VENDINFO system.  Some of these benefits are indirect --
  10. resulting from improvements in the industry as a whole -- and some
  11. are directly visible to the users.

  13.    o  The use of a single, consistent structure for information
  14.       about shareware and public-domain products will make it much
  15.       easier for users to find specific information about a given
  16.       product.

  18.    o  The human-readable front text in the VENDINFO.DIZ file will
  19.       provide the user a quick summary of the nature of the product,
  20.       as well as contact information for technical support and for
  21.       ordering.  This information can be viewed using ordinary
  22.       text viewers, including BBS in-zip viewers.

  24.    o  The free VendView viewer (March 1994) will provide easy access
  25.       to much more information about each product in a convenient,
  26.       menu-driven manner.  This information includes such things as
  27.       detailed descriptions; required platform; prices and
  28.       registration benefits; contact information for both technical
  29.       support and ordering, and much more.

  31.    o  The VENDINFO record actually SAVES space in the distribution
  32.       package, because it's almost always smaller than the
  33.       VENDOR.DOC, SYSOP.DOC, READ_ME.DOC, and other files it
  34.       replaces.  Thus, average user costs for downloads will be
  35.       slightly reduced.

  37.    o  Users will have increased confidence that they're receiving
  38.       products in the form intended by the authors.  Both the tools
  39.       in the hands of the distributors and the free viewer in the
  40.       hands of the user will be able to test for changes to the
  41.       package, and whether or not those changes are allowed by the
  42.       author.  Packages with missing pieces will at the very least
  43.       be automatically detectable, and should even begin to disappear
  44.       from distribution channels.  The end-user viewer will also be
  45.       able to report whether or not a particular package allows
  46.       distribution by a particular channel.

  48.    o  Automation of major portions of BBS and, especially, vendor
  49.       package handling will reduce distributor costs significantly.
  50.       This can make the entire industry more efficient, enabling
  51.       users to obtain products more economically, and enabling
  52.       smaller, perhaps specialized, distributors to conduct business
  53.       profitably.  The result will be greater user access to
  54.       products, at lower cost.

  56.    o  It is anticipated that the VENDINFO Product Registry will
  57.       eventually allow users, for a small fee, to do on-line searches
  58.       for products satisfying quite detailed needs, including type,
  59.       platform, cost, and many of the other criteria contained in the
  60.       VENDINFO record.
